The video that enrages the fundamentalist Buddhists

The Buddhist fundamentalists have managed to deny residence in Sri Lanka star American R & B Akon. It all started with a Facebook campaign protesting against the juxtaposition of girls in bikinis and the statue of Buddha in a clip of the singer. But the case has become political since the authorities in Colombo announced Wednesday that the rapper would not have a visa to come and sing in Sri Lanka.
La chaîne privée Maharaja TV (MTV), basée à Colombo, avait prévu de
sponsoriser, le 24 avril, le "Super Fest 2010", un concert dont Akon devait être la vedette. Mais lundi après-midi, deux bus de manifestants ont
débarqué devant les bureaux de la chaîne pour caillasser le bâtiment, blessant quatre personnes. Les manifestants brandissaient des panneaux sur
lesquels étaient inscrits : "Ne laissez pas Akon venir au Sri Lanka", ou : "Chassons Sirasa FM (la station de radio de MTV) qui tente de perturber
le 'Sangha Saasana'" (message bouddhiste)".
La colère a commencé à monter dès janvier, peu après la création du groupe
Facebook "On déteste Akon, (son clip est une insulte à Bouddha)". Le groupe compte aujourd'hui
près de 15 000 fans.
Mercredi, le gouvernement a annoncé qu'Akon se verrait refuser son visa
touristique pour entrer au Sri Lanka au motif que sa musique n'était "pas
sensible à l'héritage culturel du pays". Akon s'est immédiatement
excusé auprès de la communauté bouddhiste et a affirmé qu'il n'avait pas
réalisé que la statue apparaissait dans la vidéo.
Jeudi, le ministre sri-lankais du Tourisme, Achala Jagoda, a estimé que, en
refusant d'accueillir la star, le pays avait perdu une occasion inespérée de
promouvoir le tourisme.
Le Sri Lanka est un pays laïc dont 70 % de la population est de confession bouddhiste.

sur la côte est du Sri Lanka. Il est allé photographier les dégâts pour un média associatif local, Perambara.org, après la
manifestation.
La vidéo n'a pas pu passer à la télévision parce que leschanteurs anglo-saxons ont très peu de temps de diffusion sur les chaînes sri-lankaises. Par ailleurs, Akon est loin d'être très populaire ici. La musique
occidentale ne touche que certaines parties du Sri Lanka, en général les zones
riches où les gens ont accès à des chaînes anglophones. Je pense que le clip a
été récupéré sur YouTube. Et la statue apparaît quelques secondes au second
plan, ce qui signifie que quelqu'un a dû le regarder très attentivement.
Les manifestants sont des bouddhistes fondamentalistes qui ont gagné
beaucoup de pouvoir depuis qu'ils ont été relancés en 2002, grâce au très
populaire moine conservateur Ven. Gangodawila Soma Thera, décédé en
2003. Il ne s'agit pas d'un groupe bien
organisé, mais il a déjà attaqué des mosquées dans la ville et, en 2004, on l'a accusé d'avoir lancé une grenade lors d'un concert organisé par la star de
Bollywood Shah Rukh Khan. Deux personnes avaient été tuées.
Maharaja TV a dit que les manifestants étaient arrivés dans deux bus des
transports publics sri-lankais en provenance de Kelaniya. Ce qui est
intéressant, c'est que le ministre du Travail,
Hon. Athauda Seneviratne, est originaire de cette ville. Il a eu plusieurs fois des disputes avec
le réseau Maharaja ces derniers temps. Il est donc probable qu'il soit impliqué
dans cette affaire, d'autant plus qu'il cherche à gagner des voix auprès de l'électorat
conservateur en vue des élections du 8 avril."
