Hollywood and Bollywood join forces against piracy of films in India
This alliance comes at a time when Hollywood is trying to exploit global markets more aggressively and where the Indian movie studios are increasingly important - reducing the differences between American and Indian filmmakers, who have not always been on the same wavelength in regard to intellectual property issues.
In development for a year this coalition against film piracy in India will work with the screening rooms to fight against recording movies with portable cameras - the source of 90 percent of all pirated DVDs.
Politicians will also be contributing to adopt more effective laws, the police and apply for ISPs to combat online piracy.
The MPAA - which already had similar alliances in the U.S., Europe and Hong Kong - would not disclose the budget of the coalition, saying only that it will be funded by its members.
The piracy has cost the Indian film industry U.S. $ 959 million and 571 000 in 2006, according to Ernst & Young. The pirated DVDs in turn represent 60 percent of the market, according to the firm KPMG.
Piracy has become more momentum in India with the advent of high speed Internet connections and the spread of DVD players. Over the past two years, the number of Indian households equipped with a DVD has risen from four to 45 million.
Indian consumers would buy 700 million illegal DVDs every year, which greatly reduces the profitability of the screening rooms.
KPMG predicts that the annual revenues of the Indian cinema will experience annual growth of 8.9 per cent to U.S. $ 3 billion in 2014.
